D.C. STORMWATER

Greg Kahn’s use of layering and attention to detail in his photographs mirrored the cerebral, intricate, tone of the story of stormwater runoff in Nature Conservancy magazine. We created a contract for nine months in order to capture the rainiest days possible, but as luck would have it we experienced an unprecedented drought in D.C. at the beginning of the assignment. Greg was game to experiment with conceptual images—this included lugging storrmwater from the Anacostia River onto rooftops capture the city skyline. Fortunately, it eventually began to rain and Greg was able to capture what this looked like from a street level. Every photo Greg took in this story is as carefully considered as the next, inviting the viewer to stay within the frame a bit longer to see all that is happening within them.

“Rolaine was a joy to work with on my project covering stormwater throughout Washington, D.C. My assignment needed a lot of rain for the photos, and Rolaine kept in touch throughout the year to coordinate what days would work best and how the visuals could enhance the story. There was never a moment where I wasn’t armed with all the information and a clear understanding of the narrative. Rolaine was also wonderful in brainstorming ideas and coming up with a shot list that distilled a very large story into the most important photographs.” -Greg Kahn
